California and electronics were top targets for January 10 cargo theft
Five incidents were recorded from January 10 cargo theft reports, two more than the week prior. Thirteen additional cargo theft incidents from 12/21-12/27 were received this week by CargoNet. The majority of thefts occurred on Christmas Eve and Tuesday the 27th.
California was the targeted hot spot of the week with five reported thefts. Sixty percent of the cargo stolen was electronics. Locations of the occurrences included two parking lots, a warehouse, and both a secured and unsecured yard.
Texas and Georgia were also trouble spots for cargo theft incidents. The commodities hijacked were two tractors, food and beverage, electronics, and household items.
The hottest commodity to steal this week was electronics, making up 22% of all reported cargo theft incidents. Household items were a popular target with three reported events, while food and beverage followed closely with two thefts. Fifty percent of all recorded incidents involved stolen tractors and/or trailers in addition to the cargo.
Parking lots were the most common destination for cargo thieves, accounting for 33% of the locations targeted this week. Additional thefts occurred in both secured and unsecured yards, parking lots, warehouses, on the side of the road, and at a rail yard.
